The science behind Voice Flow Straw
Straw phonation, a technique known as Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) developed by
Dr. Ingo Titze, one of the world’s leading voice scientists who has published a variety of academic papers on the topic, operates by creating back pressure. The specially designed narrower size of the Voice Flow Straw generates more back pressure compared to traditional straws, modifying airflow to limit its escape from the body.
Normally, as we sing, our vocal folds resist the push of air pressure from the lungs. When using a straw, however, air accumulates in the oral cavity due to our mostly closed mouth. This air pushes back against the lung pressure, optimizing vocal fold positioning, shape, and overall alignment. It promotes smooth vocal fold movement, thereby enhancing efficiency and clarity in voice production.
